Oil is a natural fuel that is formed from buried, decayed plants and animals, under extreme heat and pressure over a time span of millions of years. Similarly, natural gas is the result of these deposits and sometimes even gets mixed with the oil. The primary function of an oil and gas extraction company is to locate, extract and refine these natural resources. Big oil companies carry out large-scale extractions, while private contractors support the mining sub-sector.

A job in the gas industry is very rewarding. You simply need to identify the sphere of work that interests you the most. The gas industry has a number of job opportunities. Depending on the qualifications and placements available, companies hire employees for diverse onshore and offshore operations.

The jobs available in the oil and natural gas industry is divided into three categories:

-Upstream- Operations in oil production come under this category. The requirement is for contractors who specialize in seismic testing, engineering, service rig operations, drilling and identifying the manufacturers of the special equipment and supply.

-Midstream- This involves the refining and transportation of oil after drilling and extraction. Besides this, making and managing of oil pipelines helps the pipeline operators earn billions of dollars.

-Downstream- This involves effective sale and wholesale operations carried out by gas distributors.

The big companies are involved in all the three spheres. This means that they extract, purify, transport and sell oil and natural gas. Small-scale companies focus on any one particular area – it could be either drilling or the laying of pipelines.

Upstream sector jobs are the most sought-after, since jobs are often international and involve extensive travel. Personnel are employed in Alaska, the Arctic, Canada and Iraq and the Middle East. Once you gain the required experience and skill, you can find a position with any large company and enjoy traveling to different places.

You need not limit your job hunt to oil and gas companies only. Multinational and big companies very often outsource work to oil service companies that lease and install facilities or equipment. Service companies send their employees to the operations bases of the companies, whenever and wherever needed.

Entry-level positions in the oil and natural gas industry are mostly in the production, purifying and transportation divisions. Jobs such as oil engineering and exploration require hands-on experience and training.

Some Of The Jobs Available:

Petroleum Geologist: Required to analyze and interpret gathered information. This position usually heads the exploration operations. Another job in this stream is that of a paleontologist, who studies fossil remains.

Rotary Drillers: They supervise the operations of the machinery and control the drilling speed and pressure.

Pump operators: They maintain the pump motors and other similar surface equipment that is used to extract oil from wells. The production supervisors and engineering team supervises their work.

In addition to the positions mentioned, there are openings for electricians, welders, laborers and instrument repairers. In the non-automated plants, maintenance personnel and operators are often needed.

The depressed economy has had a catastrophic effect of the job market. The oil industry took its biggest dive for decades shortly after news of the recession was announced. But of course it wasn\\\\\\\’t only the oil industry, almost every industry you care to think of has been adversely affected too. We are now seeing the biggest unemployment crisis for many years, as more and more people have been laid off while organizations try to tighten their survival belts. The only companies that are managing to carry on trading are those essential industries of which the oil sector is one.

The oil industry is actually in the middle of a recruitment drive looking for new staff to man their oil rigs. The present sourcing center for the industry is out in the Middle East, and the products from this industry are some of the biggest traded commodities anywhere in the world. So influential has this market sector become that we have seen new developments in the Middle East where before there was only desert. Statistics show that the oil industry has single handedly made a lot of men very rich. So called \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\”Black Gold\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\” is undenied wealth, and used properly, this wealth can change economies almost overnight. However it is also a very expensive business to finance, especially when some of the mining has to done hundreds of miles offshore.

Although it is such an expensive operation to finance, the long term gains nearly always outweigh the short term expenses. The truth of the matter is that working the rigs is very well paid as a direct result of the high value of the product being mined. The truth of the matter is that most industrialized countries have become dependent on oil. Because of this dependence, and in particularly the dependence of the automobile industry, each country has to buy a certain quantity of metric liters to keep their economies flowing. Looking at the growing marketplace for oil, especially from developing nations, it’s hard to see when the oil industry is ever going to slow down.

A key reason for wanting to get into the oil industry, or at least to stay with it, is the important need to make sure that this limited resource is properly managed. We are all aware just how dependent we are on the Middle East for oil. Governments around the world have now woken up to the fact that we need to establish a way of managing this precious resource, and a controlling body has been formed to keep on eye on oil producing nations, to monitor them and ensure that they are keeping pace with demand. This body is also dedicated to ensuring that the oil industry remains in profit and also that it should be able to provide a good reliable source of employment in the coming years. This management team also keeps a look out to ensure that there is a level playing field and that all producers play by the same rule book. They must also ensure that any violations are punished.

The oil industry is normally one of the world’s most stable market places. The ongoing high levels of demand versus the rigid controls that are in place will help to keep the oil industry employment sector vibrant, and as far as the individual is concerned, targeting a job on one of the oil rigs can bring excellent rewards.

Work offshore on an Oil Rig for just half a year and get paid for the whole year? Sounds too good to be true, but that opportunity is available in offshore locations worldwide. The problem for new entrants to the industry is that these jobs are rarely advertised.

You’ll rarely find vacancies listed on oil company websites or in search engines. Why? Because now the growth is so fast that employers recruit crews via the “Walk-in Interview”. It saves time and keeps rigs fully manned.

Opportunities to work offshore worldwide have never been greater. The demand for new crews is almost at a peak. The major players in Gas and Oil exploration in the North Sea, Europe, the USA, South East Asia, and even China, have recently launched their expansion plans to drive earnings growth in 2007-2008 and beyond.

Most offshore job-seekers may never know where the next “Walk-in Interview” is going to take place. It’s almost like “speed dating” except that you only get one chance to bring along your passport and a copy of a recent payslip.

Even entry-level jobs are available within the industry, but you should have some similar shore-based skill or experience that can be adapted.

Rig workers get four hot meals a day, all you care to eat. Seafood and steaks are on the menu often. Snacks, cold drinks, and fruit juices are provided 24 hours a day.

Between working hours there are plenty of satellite programs and videos to watch, served with snacks and cold drinks. The larger corporations, go out of their way to provide all the comforts of home. Some even have Gym rooms and Saunas. Another perk is that you can call home anytime you like via satellite phones.

For the new entrant, previous offshore experience is not a requirement, but it helps. All applicants are considered on an individual basis, and once you get some basic offshore experience, you have the key which will open many doors for you.

It’s getting that initial piece of experience which sometimes presents the biggest problem, but there are legitimate ways around those problems.

If you have prior military service, or are still in the military, you will be able to use your military training to your own advantage. The military offers a great deal of excellent training, and some of it can be taken into account for deployment in the offshore oil and gas industry.

For example, if you are a mechanic in the military, you will probably have diesel and hydraulic experience. Many things offshore operate hydraulically, pneumatically, and are diesel powered.

If you worked on jet aircraft or helicopters, then you have some excellent experience to offer. Turbine engines are becoming more common all the time as power plants offshore.

Do your research and learn how to meet the hurdles, and a worthwhile career in the offshore Oil and Gas industry could be waiting for you.

Those with a keen interest should explore the untold array of offshore rig opportunities covering oilfields in the UK North Sea, Europe, The Gulf, Asia, and many other parts of the world.

For the offshore rig worker, the greatest benefit is the time off. Where else can you go to work and get two weeks out of the month off? The time off presents a truly wonderful opportunity. Could this be the career for you?

Offshore Recruitment Agencies are most likely to bring two things to your mind, one is a set of recruiters who recruit people for maritime jobs and the other being those who recruit people for jobs in the United States of America, but are located in foreign lands. These agencies which can be found on the click of a button on the web, hire candidates who want to be placed overseas or help companies who need people from other lands.

In the first type of agencies, recruiters find people for jobs that are offshore or overseas. In general, jobs in the oil and maritime industry, like that of crewman or driller are provided by these recruiters. Internet search engines are by far the best method to locate these kinds of recruiters based on the job seeker’s requirements. Invaluable information on obtaining visas for these jobs and also on compiling a good resume is available as a service of these search companies.

Recruiters who are literally located offshore constitute to the other type of offshore recruiters. These recruiters are strategically located in countries where services and labor are available at the lower cost like India. Many companies in the US recruit these offshore agencies to scan the applications that come in from candidates who are keen to fill in a job vacancy. Once the agency is satisfied with a particular resume, it forwards the resume to the company which decides whether or not to offer a job to the person.

In the recent past, many American citizens are concerned about the amount of jobs that is being offered by American companies to people in foreign lands. As a consequence, the agencies that offer these jobs facing the heat too. The most common worry among the American public is that cheaper labor offshore will lead to more jobs being led out of America. There is a lot of proof that this is not bound to happen since these agencies can recruit people for simple jobs only while complex jobs such as that of business executive and lawyers won’t be moved offshore. The personal relationship to be maintained between the candidate and the employer is that rain reason for this. Many professionals may need direct contact with the recruiters. Some others may even need closer communication with these recruiters. Offshore recruitment agencies cannot influence a candidate to take decisions pertaining to their job. This is one more reason why they cannot replace direct recruiters.

Both these recruitment agencies are controversial to an extent. But with the growing need for close and personal relationships between candidates and their prospective employers, it is no pragmatic to imagine that all jobs of recruiting will be shifted to overseas recruiters.

There are two holy grails in oil job recruitment. Recruiters aim for fairness and accuracy. Fairness in oil jobs means treating all candidates for any and all oil jobs equally. Thus all people who have the skills and a registered CV with the oil job recruitment companies are considered for any suitable position. Accuracy means getting the right people into the role and retaining them there for at least one year. Square peg oil job candidates into square oil job holes.

The petrochemical industry is huge and demands large numbers of skilled hard working people all of the time. So the oil job vacancy filling process needs to be responsive, effective and fast while keeping its values of fairness and accuracy. The oil job vacancy filling process begins in practice with the target job. Look for example at the following oil job advert for an electrical engineer:

B.Sc. in Electrical/Electronics Engineering. Excellent knowledge and skills of international codes and standards. Computer literate. Good communication and interpersonal skills. 10 Years experience in Oil or related industry, 5 years of which should be design of power supply, distribution, switch gears, Hazardous area classifications, power management, network, other electrical equipment for Offshore applications.

Oil job recruitment companies would search their candidate databases to define the largest first pool of suitable candidates. Fairness and accuracy are built into this first recruitment stage because the vacancy is well defined. Anybody who has the qualifications and 10 years experience will be in the first pool. Candidate CV cover letters will be compared to this advert and this is why it is important to target your cover letter and your CV to the job requirements in order to ensure you are not rejected at the first hurdle.

The second stage of the oil job recruitment process would be to sift in detail the CVs of all candidates. Attention to detail in candidate CVs will always pay off at this stage. CVs that demonstrate a person’s experience and competence in say “Good communication and interpersonal skills” will move to the next stage of the selection process. Recruiters will look for behavioral STARs in any CV. Behavioral because they are example of actual things achieved and STARS because they describe the Situation or Task, the Actions that the candidate took and the Results of those actions.

The short listing and interviewing stage comes next. Accuracy in recruitment decisions is achieved by assessing STARs in both CVs and interview responses and measuring them against the target job requirements. Good oil job interviewers will be skilled in drawing out from interviewees their experiences in a STAR format. They will only be interested in what candidates have actually done and not in what they think. They will ask behavioral questions as opposed to hypothetical ones.

The oil job candidates with the most relevant, the most recent and the most significant and the most STARs will land the jobs. Candidates can greatly help themselves by writing their CV and explaining their job anecdotes in terms of situation or task, action and result

Job Requirements

Working offshore is not for everyone. The job requires you to travel and be away from home and your family. It is a hard and dangerous task that has to be accomplished in harsh weather conditions. On the other hand, growth opportunities are tremendous. Starting salary for a person with no previous experience is anything between $40,000 to $60,000 annually and that too for working only for six months in a year.

Once the workers have excelled at the lower positions, they are usually promoted to higher positions depending on their performance. On the job training is also provided like job shadowing, mentoring and coaching.

Types of Jobs

There are many types of jobs available while working offshore in an oilrig. For instance, people are recruited in the control room, at the deck, for drilling, rig management, mechanical and electrical department, catering. Others are hired as rig welders, scaffolders, radio operators, medic, rig safety and training coordinator, mud engineer, painters.

Control room personnel include barge engineers who are in charge of the control room; control room operators and assistant CROs control the stability of the rigs and make liquid transfers.

On the deck, people are recruited as maintenance roustabout and foreman who looks after the deck area. Crane operators whose main duties includes crane operations.
Drill crew includes positions such as roughnecks, pumpman, dereckman and drillers. Roughnecks and pumpman takes mud weights and looks after the machinery required by the particular operation. The Dereckman’s main duty is the maintenance of the machinery in the mud pump room. Drillers occupy one of the most important positions on the rig. He is responsible for the drilling in the seabed.

Tool pushers and offshore installation manager make up the rig management.
Tool pushers work in the rig offices and rig floors. Offshore installation managers are responsible for the entire rig.

Mechanical department hires motorman, mechanics and maintenance supervisors who are responsible for all mechanical operations.
Electrical department includes positions like electrician, electronic technician and maintenance supervisors who look after the repair of all electrical equipment.

Catering team is made up of the stewardess, cook and the camp boss who are in charge of the catering, laundry and cleaning.

Before you decide to start a career in this industry, one needs to keep in mind certain criteria like health, age, experience, education and interests. The job requires you to be in good physical condition, and you need to pass certain medical examinations. Although the average age is 27 for offshore jobs, you can apply for coast guard or drilling contractor positions if you are less than 18. Experience in a particular field will help you to gain a better position and wage, but by and large, no previous experience or skill is required to be hired.

Many entry-level positions are available. No formal education is required at the lower positions. Higher education is required only at the higher levels. Oil industry is continuing to grow rapidly and hence a career in this industry is very prosperous and bright. It gives you an opportunity to work anywhere in the world in a work environment which has very high standards of safety. Besides, enjoying very high salaries, the other benefit that workers enjoy is working only for 14 days in a month. Major oil companies also provide medical and life insurance. It is a very rewarding and exciting career.

I want an offshore oil rig job as a general laborer (roughneck). Where do I apply? I keep finding these sties that want 40 bucks to "blast" your resume, but I’d rather apply myself and find someone who does the job to ask questions!
and for the lovely guy there, no, I’m not "a kid under 20" I’m in my late 20’s with a BS in technology… thanks.

brother, I hate to burst your bubble but you’re like, a kid, right? Under 20 or something? Those jobs are going to 40 YEAR OLD MEN!! Who KNOW somebody in the Union. If you have an uncle who’s in the union, you MAY have a chance but other than that, you have ZERO CHANCE. NONE whatsoever.

NONE!

http://chuckdevore.com/ – California has been overspending while driving jobs out of state with high taxes and burdensome regulations. One non-tax revenue solution that creates jobs: tap the billions of barrels of oil off the California coast using modern, environmentally safe methods of drilling. Assemblyman Chuck DeVore, candidate for U.S. Senate against Barbara Boxer in 2010, authored a bill to do just that. It passed the State Senate, but it failed in the Assembly where majority Democrats expunged the vote so it no longer officially happened at all. DeVore was interviewed by Fox News’ Stuart Varney on the issue.

If it’s offshore rig you need Offshore survival (HUET and BST) and don’t worry about the H2S, the HSE on the rig will do a brifing for you.
If it’s onland rig, you don’t need anything except good contacts;)
